Company history

Maxus is a commercial vehicle brand run by SAIC Motor, one of China's largest automotive groups. The brand arrived under its current ownership in 2012, using a European design and engineering base acquired earlier by SAIC, and has since become one of the main suppliers of van-based recreational vehicles in the Chinese market.

The company's position in the RV market is as a manufacturer of complete vehicles rather than chassis alone, which is what the domestic market's larger self-propelled formats require. Its models range from compact campervans to large coaches.

If you are buying in China, the brand's domestic dealer and service network is the practical argument for choosing it. If you are outside China, check the availability of parts and of an independent workshop before committing.

What to check before buying

  • Outside China, verify parts supply and an independent workshop before purchase. This is the main practical risk with any domestic manufacturer's export models.
  • Chinese regional standards differ from European and North American ones for emissions, lighting and equipment. Check the specification for the market you are in.
