Company history

Thor Motor Coach was founded in 1987 and has grown into the largest producer of self-propelled RVs in North America. It sits inside Thor Industries, the group that also owns Forest River and Airstream, which is why its coaches carry a wide spread of sub-brands and model names.

The company's approach has been volume and range: a great many floorplans across Class A and Class C, at a great many price points, sold through a large dealer network. That breadth is the point, and it is also what makes the brand names inside the catalogue confusing to a first-time buyer.

Because the group owns several manufacturers, two coaches that look similar on a dealer lot may be built in different plants with different component suppliers. The builders' plate on the wall is the authority, not the brand name on the side.

Product lines

LineWhat it is
Class A motorhomesThe volume diesel and gas coaches that make up most of the range.
Class C motorhomesCab-forward coaches, including the extended and super-C formats.
Sub-brandsSeveral house brands sit under the group's umbrella across different segments and dealer channels.

What to check before buying

  • Ask for the VIN and the builders' plate. With this many sub-brands, the marketing name tells you very little about what the coach is built from.
  • Volume production means the average unit is affordable, but it also means finish and fit tolerances vary between units off the same line.
  • Service availability is a reason to prefer this group if you need a workshop quickly; the dealer network is extensive.
