The maintenance and packing lists worth keeping by the door.

Maintenance

  • Tyre pressures, cold, checked with a pressure gauge
  • Tyre age and sidewall condition, looking for cracking or bulges
  • Wheel bearing play and hub temperatures
  • Trailed caravan lighting, on the 7-pin or 12-pin socket
  • Hitch coupling, safety chains and the breakaway unit
  • Roof seals around the vents, the skylight and the air conditioning
  • Slide-out seals and their wipes
  • Awning fabric condition, cleaned and dried out before stowing
  • Battery condition, terminals and the correct fuse ratings
  • Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, tested with a tester
  • Gas cylinder, hose and a leak check with detector foam
  • Spare wheel, jack and wheel brace

Packing

  • Fire extinguisher, smoke alarm and a carbon monoxide alarm
  • Spirit level, levelling wedges and wheel chocks
  • A water hose with a pressure regulator, plus a waste hose
  • Safety chains and a breakaway lanyard for a trailed caravan
  • The correct spare fuse ratings and a multimeter
  • Spare drive belt, hoses and basic hand tools
  • A folding table and two sturdy chairs
  • A folding water container, and a way to fill it up
  • A first-aid kit that includes your own medication
  • Offline maps and a charged power pack
  • Tank and pipe insulation if you are travelling in winter
