Company history

Grand Design was founded in 2012 by Don and Steve Fielkow, together with engineers who came out of Forest River. The company started from the upper-middle of the towable market rather than the entry end, which was unusual for a new entrant.

Its early reputation rested on build quality and on a floorplan book that was unusually wide for the segment. Within a few years it was a leading American towable brand, and in 2019 Winnebago acquired it, adding towables to a range that had previously been motorhome-only.

The brand still runs as a distinct name with its own model ladder. If you are comparing units on a dealer lot, the Grand Design and Winnebago ranges can end up next to each other with different equipment for similar money.

Product lines

LineWhat it is
Fifth-wheel trailersThe flagship format, with the widest selection of floorplans in the brand's range.
Travel trailersSingle- and dual-axle units covering the mid and upper part of the market.
Touring and destination modelsLarger units aimed at long stays rather than weekends.

What to check before buying

  • Fifth-wheel floorplans are the reason most people buy this brand. Compare the actual layout of the unit you are standing in, since floorplans are not standardised between years.
  • Tie-down and leveling hardware is where the money goes in a fifth-wheel. Check what is fitted versus what is optional.
  • Because the brand now sits inside Winnebago, cross-check warranty and service terms before assuming they follow the Winnebago dealer network automatically.
