Company history
Hymer was founded in 1955 by Hans-Hermann Schmidt in Bad Bergzabern, in the Palatinate region of Germany, and spent its early years building caravans before moving to self-propelled coaches in 1970. It became the largest manufacturer of motorhomes in Germany and the largest exporter of the format in Europe.
The group today trades under more than one name on purpose. Hymer itself sits at the upper end, Eriba is the small-trailer line that has been in production since the 1950s, and Stella, Fleettlin and Bchner occupy the mid ranges. Buying a Hymer group vehicle does not mean buying a Hymer-badged vehicle.
The group has not been free of change of ownership in recent years, and the arrangement of brands inside it has been rearranged more than once. Anything sold today under one of the names should be checked against the current model range rather than against the brand's reputation.
