Class A motorhome

Maximum interior space, maximum footprint.

In short

Class A is the largest self-propelled RV. It is built on a stripped motor chassis (usually a bus or heavy truck base) and looks like a motor coach. Typical length is 7.5–12 m; gross vehicle weight rating usually exceeds 4,500 kg and often reaches 14,000 kg or more.

Best for

Full-time travelFamily of 4+Long stays

What it is

Class A offers the most living space per pound spent for people who stay in one place a lot. A galley, a bathroom and a lounge are all fixed in place, so the layout does not change every time you unpack. That is why Class A is the most common choice for full-timers and long seasonal trips.

Why people choose it

The trade-offs are weight, turning circle and height. An 11 m coach needs a wide campsite and tolerates only wide roads, and fuel use is high. If most of your driving is in towns, a Class A will punish you at every turn.

What to check before you buy

Check the height before you book. Many European campsites and several European bridges are limited to 2.6–3.0 m, and a Class A with a roof rack or a satellite dish will exceed that.
