Company history

The Sprinter has been in production since 1998 and became the default base for campervan conversions in Europe, in the same way the Ford Transit and the Fiat Ducato are. Its body sizes, suspension and driveline are standardised enough that a workshop anywhere can work on one.

The same platform is sold in North America as a Class B base, which means a Sprinter-based camper can be serviced on two continents under the same chassis name. That is a genuine practical advantage.

Conversions are done by body specialists rather than by the chassis maker, so the quality of the result depends much more on the converter than on Mercedes-Benz. The chassis is the reliable part; the habitation is not.

What to check before buying

  • Ask which converter built the body, not just which chassis the coach is based on. That is where the money and the risk are.
  • Conversion weight added to the chassis's own weight is what usually puts these vehicles over their rating. Weigh the finished vehicle.
  • Service network for the chassis is a real advantage over exotic bases; use it as a selection criterion.
